Försäkringskassan has produced a new report on fatigue syndrome, the first of its kind in Sweden. The report compiles how many people suffered from fatigue and exhaustion syndrome in Sweden during the years 2018 and 2019. 19,500 of the 25,000 people who were on sick leave were women.

– Many studies show that more than 80 percent of those who apply are women. The average patient is in their 40s, often has children and family and a demanding profession, says Elin Lindsäter, a psychologist working with stress-related treatment in primary care, in “Aktuellt.”

Several reasons why sick leave is increasing

There are several reasons why sick leave from fatigue and burnout syndrome is increasing.

– What we have seen are partly different factors, social factors. You are in the middle of life and have a large family and young children. Then we also see that there are special occupational groups that are particularly vulnerable. This applies, for example, to the contact professions in health and care and school, Ulrik Lidvall tells SVT.

Professions such as architects, civil engineers, veterinarians, and animal handlers also stand out as vulnerable.
