Vaccination against covid-19 in Sweden can start during the holidays.

On Thursday, vaccine coordinator Richard Bergström said the first Swede will likely be vaccinated on December 26 or 27.

In the Västra Götaland region, according to preliminary information, vaccination may start around December 28, they say in a press release.

– We look forward to this very much. We will gradually receive the vaccine for VGR and it is important that we start the vaccination as soon as possible, says Ann Söderström, director of health and healthcare for the Västra Götaland region, in a comment.

Previously, the VG region announced that they could deliver more than 100,000 doses of vaccines in January, a figure that has now been cut in half as a result of reduced deliveries from manufacturers.

The groups to prioritize have been decided by the Swedish Public Health Agency.

Four nursing homes first out

The first doses of the vaccine will be administered in four nursing homes in Gothenburg, depending on the region.

Babbs Edberg, incoming administrative director for new seniors and the care and welfare administration in the city of Gothenburg, says in the press release:

– This is a long-awaited message. It feels great to be able to start offering vaccinations to tenants in a couple of houses right now. Vaccination is an important measure to reduce the spread in society as a whole and thus also reduce the risk of the elderly becoming infected.

According to Kristine Rygge, immunization coordinator for the region, there are approximately 22,000 people living in special housing in the region.

Primary care in the region came out earlier this week with a call for retired nurses, as it is feared that the staff will not be enough for mass vaccination.
