Emergency vehicles after the explosion near Bristol.

Four people were killed and a fifth injured when a chemical tank exploded at a water treatment plant in a south west suburb of Bristol in England.

The blast at Avonmouth occurred at noon Thursday and a fire broke out.

Luke Gazzard, a spokesman for the rescue service in the area, called the operation “very challenging.”

– Fortunately, our local fire station is not that far away and we had staff on site very, very quickly. It’s a terribly sad event, he says.

According to the police, three of the victims were employed by the treatment plant, while the fourth was a subcontractor.

Police cannot yet say with certainty what caused the explosion, but the incident is not suspected of being terrorism-related.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has expressed his condolences to the affected family members.
