Former state epidemiologist: Dan Eliasson’s trip set a bad example

Recently, several high-ranking people have aroused strong reactions because they visited places where the risk of contagion is greater than if you are at home, since the recommendation says to do everything possible. Sitting on a plane does not pose a great risk of infection because they are equipped with highly efficient so-called hepa filters, but the path to and from the plane is even worse, according to Linde.

– Even with the utmost caution, it is very difficult to avoid people at airports. As a high-ranking person with great responsibility, setting a good example is very important and then you need to be very careful about the risk of infection, says Annika Linde, who was a state epidemiologist for eight years until 2013, when Anders Tegnell took office.

Dan Eliasson reserved His trip to Las Palmas about a month ago and he spent both Christmas and New Years there with his family because his eldest daughter “stays and works for a long period.” MSB in an email to DN described the trip as “necessary for family reasons” without delving into why. He himself has spoken similarly to Expressen, who first reported on the family trip.

– To embark on a long trip, I consider a greater risk than visiting the watchmaker, as our Prime Minister did, or visiting shops when there are few people as L-leader Nyamko Sabuni did. Even if the risk had been small, it is about the role model and, only as a representative of advice and recommendations, you should be the first to follow it, says Annika Linde.

Stefan Löfven visited the Christmas shop three times in December: he bought food, had a watch repaired, looked for spare parts for his razor, visited Systembolaget and bought a Christmas present for his wife Ulla. She later commented on the matter on Instagram with the fact that she “understands that people have reacted” and “in hindsight I’m of course wondering if, for example, the Christmas present for Ulla could have been ordered online instead, on time”.

Sunday admitted Also the deputy Hans Wallmark (M) on Facebook who has been in Las Palmas with his wife during the weekends. Many have commented on the post with reasoning about the betrayal of trust and the frustration that politicians or high-ranking officials willfully ignore the rules the public is urged to follow.

– Absolutely, which is the worst case when he is the head of a social protection authority. It is true that Eliasson is not 70 years old and therefore is not at great risk of infection, but everyone should avoid traveling for reasons of care and risk groups. Obviously Eliasson is a very bad role model here, it is very unfortunate to embark on such a long journey, says Annika Linde.

– It seems that the reasoning is that “what is not prohibited is allowed” and with the lack of legislation that we have, we cannot prohibit many things so that it becomes punishable. Nobody has committed a crime, but what they have done is not follow their own recommendations and that is bad enough. It hurts confidence in already misused politics and makes people think “what the heck, if he does it, so do I.”

Annika Linde says that she herself got an extra benefit from life as she learned when she was a state epidemiologist. Under her leadership, the then Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control handled the swine flu pandemic, and even today the false rumor circulates that she would not have been vaccinated despite recommending that others do so.

– It was a radio interview with Ulf Elfving in 2011 that caused this lie to spread. What I said then was that according to my advice I did not take the seasonal flu vaccine, because I was not yet 65 years old and did not belong to any other risk group. Of course I took the pandemic vaccine, but I didn’t go before any queue or something like that, but when the vaccinators arrived at the authority, my colleagues and I got in a long line, says Annika Linde.

DN has also sought out Dan Eliasson and Interior Minister Mikael Damberg. The Public Health Agency announces that no comment will be given on Sunday.
