Differences in food prices continue to be large depending on where in Sweden you shop and at which store. It shows PRO’s huge price survey for 2019, whose annual survey has been ongoing since 1991. Hundreds of PRO members have entered more than 30,000 price data, making it Sweden’s largest annual comparison of a box food.

PRO’s large 2019 food price survey, conducted on November 6, continues to show large price differences depending on where food is purchased. The difference between the cheapest and most expensive box of food is up to 39 percent. Even when you buy online, food prices differ and depend on where you live, which also affects the possibility of home delivery. The vast majority of older people still prefer to buy food at physical stores.

– At this time, older people cannot buy in stores. We need help from loved ones or through various volunteer initiatives, says Christina Tallberg, President of the National Organization of Pensioners, PRO.

During the crown crisis, more seniors started buying food online, but it is far from everyone with digital knowledge. Buying food online is more expensive. Compared to the average price in physical stores, it costs ten percent more.

It also shows that online food is cheaper in big cities than in other parts of the country.

Among the small stores, ICA Supermarket in Kil was the cheapest. There, the lunch box cost 722 SEK. The cheapest flagship store was ICA Maxi Flygstaden in Halmstad, SEK 688. The average price nationwide was SEK 815 per PRO basket. The difference between the cheapest and the most expensive lunchbox was 39%. When it comes to geographic differences, the average price was lower in Skaraborg, SEK 791, and the highest in Norrbotten with SEK 843.

In November, PRO researchers visited several grocery stores and verified the prices of just over 30 products. No store is included in Lidköping, and no one in Götene, but several in Skara and Vara. It is unclear why Lidköping stores are not included, this was one of the cheapest last time. But even in that survey, not all grocery stores participated in Lidköping.

The lowest price in Skaraborg was found in Falköping, while several large stores in Skara are listed. Ica Munken is one of the ten cheapest in the country.
