A hospital director and four other government officials have been arrested in Jordan since seven covid patients died after the hospital was without oxygen for an hour last Saturday.

A prosecutor decided Sunday that the five would be detained for questioning in the next week.

Saturday’s tragedy has sparked outrage in Jordan, and after the deaths were announced, the country’s health minister, Nazir Obeidat, resigned.

King Abdullah II of Jordan went to the hospital last Saturday, apparently upset, and ordered the hospital director to leave his post.

Hundreds of people, including relatives of the dead, gathered in front of the hospital to protest and express their anger at the tragedy.

It is still unclear why the hospital was without oxygen for an hour last Saturday.

Jordan, which has around 9.5 million people, has registered more than 460,000 cases of coronary heart disease. More than 5,200 people with Covid-19 have so far died in the country during the pandemic.
