Greek police arrested five immigrants accused of participating in the devastating fires in the Moria refugee camp on Lesbos. Another suspect is being investigated, says responsible minister Michalis Chrisohoidis.

The investigation into the fires that destroyed most of Moria, Europe’s largest refugee camp, on September 9 is ongoing, but the Greek government has already blamed the camp’s residents.

“The camp was burned down by refugees and migrants who wanted to blackmail the government into moving quickly from the island,” government spokesman Stelios Petsas told reporters the other day in Athens.

A new temporary camp has been established at Kara Tepe, north of Mytilene. There are 5,000 beds, which can be compared to the more than 12,000 people living in the Moria camp.

So far, only about 1,000 people are reported to have moved to Kara Tepe. According to the police, many of the others are hesitant and prefer to live outdoors in the hope of leaving the island soon.
