Norway’s defender Omar Elabdellaoui suffered burns and injuries to his eyes after a firework exploded in his hand on New Year’s Eve. The 29-year-old should not have lost his sight, advises his doctor.

It was late on New Year’s Eve when a firework exploded in Elabdellaoui’s hand. The Norwegian was taken to hospital, where it was established that both eyes of the 29-year-old were injured and that he had burns to his face.

– Speak and can respond to doctors. 2020 was a difficult year, and Galatasaray were involved in a really unfortunate event at the last minute, club vice president Abdurrahim Albayrak told Turkish media at the hospital.

Injuries to the right-back should not be life-threatening, Galatasaray announced.

According to Dr. Vedat Kaya, Elabdellaoui did not lose sight and the injuries to one eye are significantly more serious than the other. According to Kaya, the Norwegian felt better on Friday, but it is still too early to comment on the long-term effects of the accident.

In an interview with the Turkish television channel NTV, Vice President Albayrak was upset. According to him, the ambulance staff must have leaked images of the wounded Norwegian.

– This person (Elabdellaoui) has three children and Galatasaray has 30 million fans. It is loved by thousands of people, family and friends in this country. What kind of conscience do you have if you post such an image? the vice president asks.

Elabdellaoui has played 49 international appearances for Norway. Before moving to Turkey this summer, he represented clubs in England, Germany, Holland, Greece and Norway.
