A fire on the ground has infiltrated a storage area in the Ryazan area, just over ten kilometers southeast of Moscow. The big problem is that around 75,000 tons of ammunition are stored in warehouses and the flames have already caused the detonation of explosives and ammunition.

About 2,300 residents within a five kilometer radius of the fire have been evacuated, roads have been closed to traffic, and flames and plumes of smoke can be seen from a great distance. Authorities admit that people were injured, but say no one has died.

The blaze broke out Wednesday afternoon and was fought at night by about 400 firefighters. Reinforcements have been sent from Moscow and Russian Defense Minister Yevgeny Zinichev has gone to the area.

Regional Governor Nikolai Lyubimov described the situation as “complex”, but in the evening said in a statement that “the worst is over, the situation is under control.”
