The alarm about the big fire came after 02.

After nearly two hours, flames began to burn through the roof of McDonalds. The rescue service quickly realized that the restaurant was beyond rescue.

– It will burn, says Commanding Officer Tommy Wållmark.

The McDonalds restaurant in Sockengränd, across from the Östberga recycling center in southern Stockholm, started burning brightly overnight on Friday. The rescue service received an alarm from a passerby shortly after 2 a.m.

– It is a fully developed fire on the premises of the restaurant, said Jonas Fröjmark, commanding officer of the rescue service, half an hour after the alarm.

The rescue service is in place with about 30 men from four stations. Police have also responded to the fire.

– There was no one in the room when it started to burn. They closed at midnight. We will probably write an arson report, says Mats Almqvist, duty officer.

Aftonbladet photographer Pontus Orre stands by the fire and reports that the extinction started with smoke divers inside the restaurant. Just before 4 o’clock he saw flames begin to break through the roof.

The external extinguishing of the passing cars was initiated, but by 0430 the fire had become so entrenched in the roof that the rescue effort changed direction.

– Now it is a question of preventing the spread to neighboring properties. The restaurant will catch fire, says managing director Tommy Wållberg.

– The spread of smoke has been enormous. We have received many calls from Årsta and Södermalm, but also from Östermalm and from Ropsten.

According to Tommy Wållberg, the roof will collapse. The rescue service remains at the scene all morning. The smoke is expected to subside as the restaurant burns with open flames.

– There is less smoke spread and less environmental impact when there is a burning fire, he says.
