It was at 9 o’clock on Saturday night that a fire broke out at the so-called cookie plant at Borealis in Stenungsund. According to the rescue service, the fire broke out in the area and no one should have been injured.
“It is a smashed compressor that is burning and caught on fire in a gas pipeline,” Dan Lindqvist told the rescue service on Saturday night.
Additional units were dispatched from Gothenburg to strengthen the rescue work, which also included units from Stenungsund. The police were also present and, for security reasons, the Uddevallavägen road was closed.
During Saturday night, the emergency services also issued a call VMA, an important message to the public, that nearby residents should enter and close windows, doors, and ventilation.
The fire went out during the morning.
At 6 a.m. on Sunday morning, emergency services announced that the fire had been extinguished.
– The VMA is retiring and we are not at the site at the moment, says Micke Olsson at the rescue service, noting that the work of the rescue service at the site will likely continue on Sunday.
On Sunday morning, Boreali communications manager Virginia Mesicek announces that the situation is under control.
– We are reviewing the extent of the damage, so it is too early to say how production is affected. What I can say is that no employee was injured during the incident, she says.
Investigate what happened
On its website, the company writes that it is investigating what happened and why it happened in close cooperation with its supervisory authorities.
“Borealis is seriously analyzing this event. We will have more information shortly, but we do not want to speculate on what happened before we have more data,” they write.
It is announced that there is no longer any danger to the public. And with safety as the top priority, we now plan repairs and startups.
The company also announces that the burning call is taking place on chimneys on Sunday. The torch is made to drain the hydrocarbon plant and can now sweep much more because the steam boilers that produce steam for the torches were stopped in connection with the incident.
“We are doing everything we can to minimize soot and now we are focused on starting up our steam boilers. We are sorry for the disruption this implies for our neighbors and surroundings,” they write.
The second largest factory in Europe.
Borealis in Stenungsund is the only polyethylene and biscuit plant in Sweden. The company is also the second largest manufacturer of polyethylene and polypropylene in Europe. Customers use different plastics to make everything from packaging to vehicle parts.
The factory in Stenungsund has a capacity to produce 750,000 tons of polyethylene per year.
