The twentieth day Knut, when Christmas and the Christmas tree are traditionally danced, only falls on the next Wednesday. But even now, many spruces have had to leave their temporary Christmas homes.
However, carelessly throwing the Christmas tree outside the gate or on the edge of the nearest forest is a littering offense and can result in a fine.
– There may be fines for environmental crimes and littering. So it can cause other things too, if you throw it away to make it dangerous in traffic, says Peter Enell, Stockholm municipal police.
Christmas trees are classified as bulky waste and should be left in the bulky garbage room if you have one. If you are not sure, check with the association or the owner. Otherwise, it is the recycling sites determined by the municipality or the nearest recycling center that apply.
– Garbage begets garbage. An area that is littered with trash attracts other trash, we already know that, says Keep Sweden Clean’s Johanna Ragnartz.
She raises a warning finger that the pandemic has prompted more people to celebrate Christmas at home in Sweden this year and that the number of spruces is therefore more than usual.
– Otherwise, it’s mainly broken glass and New Year’s pieces what we see are problems after the weekends. Fireworks are made of plastic and land a bit anywhere. And the plastic doesn’t go away.

• Recycling center. The municipality recycling center receives the spruces. It is often used as fuel for the district heating network.
• Special collection points. Some municipalities have special places for gathering fir trees. The municipality then collects the spruces for recycling.
• The rough room. In most, but not all, apartment buildings, throwing the Christmas tree in the laundry room is okay. Check with the association or the property owner.
• Garden garbage cans. If you live in a villa and have a special container for garden waste, you can place a cut fir tree there (but do not hesitate to check with your municipality).
• Collect. In some places it is possible to order fir harvesting for a fee.
