After images of a large hole in the ship’s hull were made public in connection with a new Discovery documentary series, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto told Hufvudstadsbladet that the seabed and the wreck and that a 3D model of the process will be made.

– Right now it is a complementary investigation due to the new information. This does not mean that the old accident investigation is invalid, there is much that is relevant, Haavisto tells the newspaper.

Finland will contribute According to previous data from the 1997 Accident Investigation Board report, Estonia has so far not requested any further assistance. Haavisto says Estonia is now in a slightly different position than before, which, according to him, may be a natural explanation for why the hole has not been seen before.

– The next step is an official investigation. At the same time, it is now important that the peace of the tomb be respected and that it runs smoothly, it is the last resting place of more than 800 people, Haavisto tells Hufvudstadsbladet.

Estonian Prime Minister Jüri Ratas has previously demanded a new technical study of the ship and a study of the seabed for which Estonia will be responsible. Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu believes that a new investigation is not the same as making the results of the 1997 report of the Accident Investigation Board obsolete.

– We will make more decisions based on the conclusions of technical investigations, says Reinsalu to the Estonian media company ERR.

Also two from Estonia Former prime ministers of the 1990s and 2000s, Mart Laar and Andrus Ansip, told ERR they wanted to see a new investigation.

– Now it is convenient to clarify how the hole was formed and what role the hole had in the sinking of the ferry. This is completely new information and, in my opinion, a very important fact that requires a reconsideration of the causes of the sinking of Estonia, says Andrus Ansip.

Evelyn Sepp was vice chair of the Estonian Commission of Estonia, which in 2005 examined the military transport on board Estonia in 1994. She tells ERR that the ship’s hull should be considered as the main evidence.

– Carry out a detailed examination of the hull, as this is the key location. Since we have never received a full description, we have no circumstance to rely on that you can prove either.

Previous theories about a hole in the helmet has been consistently rejected by the authorities, but after the new images, the foreign ministers of Sweden, Finland and Estonia wrote in a joint statement that they had agreed that the information should be verified. At the same time, they emphasized that they trusted the conclusions presented in the 1997 final report of the International Accident Investigation Board.
