Finland plans to offer the covid-19 vaccine to the entire population and hopes to be able to start with selected health personnel in January.
“The aim of Finland is to protect the entire population by offering free vaccines to all those who want and who do not have any health obstacles,” says the Minister of Family Affairs and Care, Krista Kiuru.
To date, Finland has obtained 3.6 million doses of vaccines through the joint EU procurement program. This means that the two necessary doses can be given to 1.8 million of the total 5.5 million inhabitants of the country, says the Institute of Health and Well-being, which adds that more purchases will be made.
The first doses will be administered in January to healthcare professionals who work with covid patients or who work in nursing homes, according to the government. Then it is planned to vaccinate the elderly and other vulnerable groups.
However, children will not be vaccinated until more studies are conducted on the subject, the government adds.
