Filmstaden closes all its cinemas

Filmstaden announced earlier this week that it would keep its cinemas closed, but withdrew the decision after state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell declared that theaters would not be affected by the new restrictions. A new decision for Filmstaden will be made later this week when the issue is clarified.

However, the decision was made on Wednesday morning after Stefan Löfven (S) and Social Affairs Minister Lena Hallengren (S) clarified during a press conference Tuesday night that the exemption for seated audiences was not applies, but the government assumes that the regions follow the audience limit of eight people. Filmstaden decided to close all cinemas for at least four weeks.

– Until December 22 we will be closed. Then you will see what messages arrive. Different local restrictions can be questioned after that, Helena Eklund, Filmstaden’s marketing manager, tells TT.

Could it be that parts of the chain open before others?

– We have it as a stage but we have not made a decision about it yet. It takes a bit of planning to open and close so it’s hard to tell at this point. But we are not ruling it out, says Helena Eklund.

However, Svenska Bio will remain open despite the eight-person audience limit, Svenska Bio CEO Peter Fornstam told DN earlier this week.

– In the short term, at Svenska bio we have decided that we will be open regardless of eight or 50 people. But on the other hand, there is a great risk that movie owners will withdraw their releases based on the belief that there are only eight people. If they do, we should stop keeping it open.
