If you grew up in Sweden during the 1980s, you probably have a special nostalgic nerve that kicks in when Sickan in passive aggressive triumph utters the words, “I have a plan,” followed by Ragnar Grippe’s classic synthetic melody.
The gold of childhood is always hard to beat, but Tomas Alfredson, along with screenwriters Henrik Dorsin (who also plays Charles-Ingvar Jönsson) and Rikard Ulvshammar, has come close to the DNA of originality. The combination of high-flying visions, flat suitcases, bizarre figures, and DIY bumps, as well as, of course, a thrilling ending with a Franz Jäger safe makes for a cozy, retro gathering.
The concern with how the movie should look and feel is cool and loving, of course. In the same way that every tweed suit was perfectly gloomy in “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy,” Alfredson and the gang have created a well-thought-out look for the Jönsson league, down to the smallest detail.
Without giving too much away, the best parts of the film take place in the middle, in the Finnish nursing home and occupied by tango Pirogen and when Lena Olin and Reine Brynolfsson appear as the wonderful radar couple Anita and Televinken.
The league itself in its updated form: David Sundin as Harry, Anders “Ankan” Johansson as Vanheden, and Hedda Stiernstedt as Doris – all are charming in their own way, but have a harder time performing together. There is something about the cut that has been twisted a bit and important points are neglected, despite the long playing time.
“Beware the Jönsson League” was conceived as one of the great Christmas films of Swedish cinema. It’s easy to see in advance how many popcorn and movie tickets have been sold. The economic recession will surely hit hard somewhere in the ecosystem.
But for families with middle-aged children at home on the TV sofa, it will remain a cozy moment, where parents can nod in appreciation, and children, in fact, I have seen it with their own eyes, drop their mobile phones. and live a while.
