With every minute that passes, the hope of finding survivors decreases.

On the first day of the year, one of the ten missing was found dead.
And tonight the temperature will drop to five degrees below zero in the landslide zone.

Norwegian and Swedish rescue teams are battling against time to save the victims of the difficult landslide in Gjerdrum shortly before 4 a.m. on Wednesday.
Swedish rescuers were forced to interrupt attempts to reach the landslides via a huge bridge yesterday, the bridge carriage was too heavy for the unstable terrain.

Instead, the Swedes used styrofoam slabs to enter the red zone on foot.

– They are like dominoes and you place them in front of you when you walk, says task leader Roy Alkvist.

The temporary “bridge” was about 60 meters long. Tomas Norberg, the Gothenburg rescue service, is a contributor to the Use team:

– Geologists have made measurements that indicate there may be lost houses there, he tells TT.

Helicopters ready

Experts from NVE, the Norwegian Water and Energy Agency, monitored soil conditions as the team searched for survivors. Furthermore, the helicopters were ready to retreat to rescue the team if the ground gave way.

– There are great risks with this assignment. We constantly monitor the area and also help from the air if we need to pick them up by helicopter, says Roy Alkvist.

The team’s plan was to search two of the demolished houses using camera equipment connected to rescue dogs.

– We hope we can find people still alive. Dogs are trained to find both the living and the dead, says Philip Milford, who leads the team with dog handlers.
On Friday afternoon, the police held an additional press conference.

– Not long ago we found a person, sadly dead in the central racial zone, the red zone. The person was found by Romrike fire and rescue teams along with other personnel who worked there in the area during this period, says task leader Roger Pettersson.

The dead man was found at 2:30 p.m., but has not yet been identified.

During the afternoon of Friday it snowed a lot in the area and during the night the temperature will drop to minus five degrees. There is nothing to affect security in the area, but for survivors, the night can be tough.

Mona Torp and Stein Magne Ranum lived in one of the 31 houses that were washed away by the deadly avalanche. In the first landslide, Mona ended up under a washing machine, cohabitating Stein Magne was wedged under the exterior wall. When the second landslide lifted the wall, it came loose.

The cohabiting couple had surviving guard angels, but when they were rushed to hospital on Wednesday, their body temperature was just 33 degrees.

– It was like we had the lead role in a horror movie. We were completely helpless. It felt like we were sitting in a big hole. It was dark and unreal, we didn’t recognize each other, Mona Torp tells Norwegian VG.

The king sent a message

Now that the couple have decided to move out of the fast clay resting area, they no longer feel safe there.

Just before 6 p.m., rescuers were forced to finish their work at night; it was too dangerous to work in the dark. However, drones and thermal imaging cameras continued to be used in the search for survivors.

During the day, King Carlos XVI Gustav sent a telegram to the Norwegian royal family:

– The Queen and I want to express our deep participation due to the terrible landslide in Gjerdrum. Our thoughts are with the affected families and the Norwegian people.

It is not yet known what caused the landslide on Wednesday.

Police have now published a list of those missing in the avalanche. One of the ten on the list has been found dead, but has not yet been identified.
