– We are in relatively high numbers, says Anders Tegnell about the British mutation.
In Västra Götaland, for example, it has been shown that 20 percent of positive samples are of this variant.
– We need to do our best to keep the levels as low as possible, says Tegnell.
– Obviously it is in Sweden and it is transmitted with a social infection, you have to call it, when it is at this level.
It’s unclear exactly how much more contagious that variant is than previous variants, according to Tegnell, and he says that the different models are targeting something between 20-30 percent and 60-70 percent.
– The difference between the variants is difficult to assess, but it is clearly becoming the dominant variant in more and more countries.
The same image of disease
However, it doesn’t give any other clear picture of the disease, he says.
– As an individual, you shouldn’t be more or less worried.
Sweden’s ability to detect new variants of the virus is under construction, but last week about 10 percent of all samples could be tested for new variants.
– But it varies a lot between the different regions, because we are in a development phase.
The goal is to get to 20 percent, and according to Tegnell, there are “good hopes” of getting there fairly quickly.
In 2021, there has been a gradual reduction in patients treated for COVID-19 in hospitals, according to the National Board of Health and Welfare. But now you also experience a plateau when cornering.
– Some regions show an increase in the number of patients and we see the largest increase in Västerbotten, both in IVA and in other care departments, says Irene Nilsson Carlsson, public health adviser at the National Board of Health and Welfare.
– The Västerbotten example shows how quickly an infection can break out.
Mortality rates are declining
As for the number of deaths in Sweden, a “quite positive” development can be seen with a decreasing trend, according to Anders Tegnell. According to him, this is due to a certain reduction in the spread of infection earlier, but also to the fact that more people get vaccinated in nursing homes.
Iréne Nilsson Carlsson shares the assessment, who believes in continued decline.
– Of course there are still many people, and there are people behind the statistics here, he says.
The latest statistics from the national vaccination registry show that just over 432,000 doses of vaccine have been distributed in Sweden. More than 331,000 people have received at least one dose, corresponding to just over 4 percent of the adult population. Of these, just over 101,000 people have received two doses.
Problems with deliveries
But vaccine deliveries remain problematic: They are highly uncertain and information about transports is not shared for security reasons, says Anders Tegnell.
However, 80 percent of Säbo residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine, according to Tegnell. Among people receiving home care, the figure is 32 percent.
The Swedish Public Health Agency points out that post-registrations are carried out and that the actual number of vaccinations and vaccinated people is slightly higher. The vaccination information effort will increase and increasingly target the public in the future, according to Tegnell.
– The main message is: Protect yourself and others.

In Sweden, another 44 deaths with confirmed covid-19 have been reported, and a total of 12,370 infected people have died in the country. A total of 604,577 people in Sweden have been confirmed to be infected with covid-19.
New deaths in the National Authority statistics have occurred in most cases several days earlier, and deaths that have occurred in the near future are not included due to reporting delays. This means that the daily update shows the reported death rates, not the death rate for that particular day.
