Although crime has worsened, the number of police officers in the external service has decreased since 2015. This is reported by Polistidningen, which refers to previously classified information.

As of December 2019, 9,049 police officers were employed in the external service. The number of employees has increased slightly from the previous year, but is still lower than in 2015, when the corresponding figure was 9,226.

In total, there have been more police officers since 2015.

Lena Nitz, president of the Swedish Police Confederation, complains about the development.

– The goal has long been to increase the number of police officers in the external service. The population has grown and crime has become more serious with, among other things, shootings and explosions, he tells Polistidningen.

The statistics refer to a broader category of police officers in the external service. In addition to the more than 7,000 police officers working in crime prevention and intervention activities, this includes border police, traffic police, naval police and aspiring police officers.

The figure also includes parental leave, leave and sick leave. In practice, this means that there are far fewer available for external services.

Lena Nitz believes that a heavy workload and a harsh work environment mean that police employees seek other forms within authority.

– It does not pay for itself very well and career paths are few for those who want to remain in external service. At the same time, there is a lack of police competence in other parts of the organization, so those who are not satisfied with the external service have many other parts to request, he tells Polistidningen.
