The plan was for 200 people to take part in the attack that would take place before the November presidential elections and for the governor to “be held accountable for treason.”

“Several members of the group spoke of assassinating ‘tyrants’ or kidnapping an acting governor,” according to the court document obtained by the BBC.

Democrat Gretchen Whitmer has come under fire for the tough crown restrictions she has imposed on the state. Far-right groups, which have demanded that the restrictions be lifted, have organized, among other things, protests in front of the Congress building.

The thirteen people suspected of being involved in the planned kidnapping, according to the FBI, have organized weapons training in various states and have attempted to make bombs on several occasions. The evidence contains recordings of a secret meeting that took place after the FBI managed to infiltrate the group.

At a press conference, Gretchen Whitmer linked the planned attack on her to President Donald Trump’s expressed support for the armed protesters. Among other things, Trump tweeted “Liberate Michigan,” which Whitmer says has fueled mistrust and encouraged violence.
