Fauci wants to get out of Trump’s election publicity

Anthony Fauci, who became a famous face in much of the world during Trump’s coronavirus press conferences this spring, says in an interview with CNN that the election film is “unhappy and really disappointing.”

When the news broke in the United States on Sunday, Fauci sent a written comment to CNN in which he said that “during my nearly five decades in public service, I have never officially endorsed any political candidate.”

“The comments attributed to me without my consent in the Republican campaign film are taken out of context from a comprehensive statement made several months ago about the efforts of federal health professionals.”

The Trump campaign, for its part, has defended the film and the use of the quote, first by campaign manager Tim Murtaugh, and a few hours later by the president himself.

“It really is Dr. Fauci’s own words. We have done a ‘phenomenal’ job according to some governors. Most agree. And now new vaccines and cures are arriving, much earlier than expected,” Trump wrote in Twitter.

According to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University, more than 214,000 Americans have lost their lives as a result of the coronavirus and 7,761,000 people have been confirmed to be infected.
