Here’s the next round of the perennial debate over whether Anders Tegnell is right about the virus.
The Swedish strategy was praised during a hearing in the United States Senate.
Then the country’s top doctor, Anthony Fauci, got angry.
After dealing with Donald Trump and his controversial vision of the corona pandemic, all year long, it takes a lot for Fauci to spiral out of control. But Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky almost did it during Wednesday’s Senate open hearing. And that’s drawing in Sweden.
The Swedish strategy has been supported and drenched in the world since the pandemic hit and most countries closed their partnerships. Anders Tegnell and the Swedish Public Health Agency have received harsh criticism.
Since many countries were hit by a new wave of the virus with a further spread of infection during the fall, the picture has partly changed. Many people see Sweden as a possible way to curb the virus without shutting down and risking an economic collapse.

Compared to Sweden
On Wednesday, an interrogation took place in the United States Senate with Anthony Fauci, the man behind the United States strategy and considered one of the world’s leading doctors in infection control.
There he received harsh criticism from Senator Rand Paul, who long advocated soft measures and opposed the shutdown of the society. He attacked both Fauci and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who became something of a national idol for his televised press conferences on the pandemic.
– New York had the worst death toll in the world. How can you jump in and say that Governor Cuomo did such a good job? Says Paul.
He then compared New York and the neighboring state of New Jersey to Sweden and claimed that the death toll here was one third.
– Sweden had a softer strategy with mainly voluntary measures.
– You can object and say that the population of Sweden is different from that of New York and New Jersey. It’s possible. But even the average death toll in the United States is now higher than in Sweden. The death toll in the United States is actually comparable to that in less developed countries where social distancing is virtually impossible, such as Brazil, Bolivia and Ecuador, says Rand Paul.

I do not regret
The senator said it was not yet clear whether authoritarian measures to stop the spread of the infection were effective. He then challenged Anthony Fauci and asked if he felt any remorse for the American strategy, when Sweden, despite keeping society relatively open, has lower death rates in covid-19.
Then the senior doctor became noticeably irritated.
– I will gladly review the details at another time. You’ve said a lot. He has compared us to Sweden, but there are many differences. But compare Sweden with other Scandinavian countries. They are worse.
Fauci believes that the measures he and his institutes recommended at the beginning of the pandemic were necessary to slow the explosive spread of the infection that hit the east and west coasts of the United States.
– The only way to stop the explosion of the virus was to physically separate people.
Sweden has so far 5,876 deaths from covid-19. The United States, with a population of about 328 million people, has exceeded 200,000 deaths in recent days.
