It was during the evening of New Year’s Eve that the alarm came to the police. A couple in their 30s and their children, the youngest two, were exposed to rocket fire in the center of Karlstad, according to the alarm.
The couple were walking with children and a stroller when they were suddenly shot and reportedly beaten on the legs.
– They were hit but no serious injuries have been reported, thank God. But the detonation was close, so they experienced howling and hearing effects, says Lars Hedelin.
He is a spokesperson for Värmland and Örebro counties and has received several alerts and reports during New Year’s Eve.
“A lot to do”
Sheer statistics, he is referring to Brå (Crime Prevention Council), but judging by the reports, there has been a lot to do.
– The feeling is that this disrespectful shooting targeting real estate has increased. We have had many incidents in both Värmland and Örebro, where people feel like they are being shot with some kind of intimidation or harassment, he says.
The reports are said to come from “all possible directions.” Often times it is the young people who take care of the rockets.
– Not all young people shoot aggressively, they shoot as intended: into the sky. But people sometimes call anyway because they are filming in a densely populated area, says Lars Hedelin.
He points out that it is against the law of order to shoot in densely populated areas. During the conversation, a new alarm occurs in about 20 young people who shoot rockets at each other and at the apartments.
– Last night, we made a specific effort and called a handful of young people who were visited and identified. Then we will see if there will be something more investigative, says Lars Hedelin.
Various suspects
As for the couple who walked and were shot, in Karlstad, the police visited several young men who were standing nearby and suspected of shooting.
– There was no arrest but they are suspects. The legal situation is not clear, what is suspected. If it becomes a nuisance, causing bodily injury or something else. The patrol is writing right now, announces Lars Hedelin at 6.30pm.
Its calling is to think twice when it comes to rockets; preferably, I would have seen that you didn’t shoot at all.
– I think that as a private person, you should refrain from making fireworks. You are associated with risks to yourself and others and the law of order is such that if you risk harming people, animals or property, a permit is required. The same if you shoot in a densely populated area and you don’t have a permit but still shoot, you can be prosecuted for it.
Lars Hedelin concludes:
– But the worst that can happen is that you hurt someone.
