About 500 relatives of coronavirus victims are suing the Italian state for just over 1 billion Swedish crowns for a series of failures at the start of the pandemic.
The lawsuit is against Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, Health Minister Roberto Speranza and Attilio Fontana, Lombardy regional president, the group said in a statement.
The lawsuit alleges a “serious failure” of the Lombardy government and government, including delaying the closure of the worst affected towns of Alzano and Nembro, as well as a lack of planning at the local and regional level.
Italy, which was one of the first countries outside of China to be hit by a major virus outbreak, imposed a nationwide lockdown on March 10. But Lombardy prosecutors are investigating whether local action should have been taken earlier.
