It was in August in connection with the World Tour Tour de Pologne competition in Poland that the terrible accident took place.
Dylan Groenewegen raced on the last stage, but Fabio Jakobsen was faster behind him. Jakobsen was pressured by Groenewegen and just before the goal line the former crashed into a fence and flew towards a referee. A helicopter ambulance rushed to the scene and took him directly to the hospital. After receiving medical help, the Dutchman was placed in an artificial coma.
Now, about four months later, Fabio Jakobsen breaks the silence. In an interview with the Dutch newspaper AD, which he read about on the Cyklingnews site, he talks about the serious injuries and recalls the accident that changed his life.
– I had a couple of kilometers left and I was behind my teammates Davide Ballerini and Florian Sénéchal. That’s the last I remember, then it went black.
“I could not do anything”
Thousands of miles away, Jakobsen’s girlfriend, Delore, followed the race without knowing what was coming. When he saw the accident, he began to suspect the worst.
– He crashed into an officer and went down into the woods. His helmet flew off and then I knew he was really wrong. I started reading on Twitter and it was so horrible. I couldn’t do anything but sit in front of the TV and pray that he didn’t die. After a couple of hours I packed a suitcase to go to Poland and later that night my phone rang and it was the doctor. At first I did not dare to answer because I was afraid to hear what I was afraid of. That Fabio had died, says girlfriend Delore, 22, and lets Jakobsen summarize the injuries:
– A concussion, broken skull, broken nose, no taste or smell and ten teeth have disappeared, says the 24-year-old cyclist.
Fabio Jakobsen is feeling better today and is about to make a full recovery. He plans to compete again in the summer of 2021.
