The Congolese army-Kinshasa says 14 members of the armed extremist group ADF have been killed fighting for control of the village of Loselose in the eastern part of the country. Two of the army soldiers were also killed in the fighting.
The clashes take place the same week that 25 civilians were found killed in the fields around the nearby village of Tingwe near Eringeti in the eastern part of the country, in what the government describes as a massacre carried out by the ADF. The group itself has not taken over the act.
The territory where Loselose and Tingwe are located is known for its cocoa and banana plantations. Harvesting has continued since November and the dead villagers are believed to have been assaulted while working on the farms.
The ADF is one of dozens of armed groups ravaging eastern Congo-Kinshasa. The extremist Islamist group started as a rebel movement in neighboring Uganda in the 1990s. It is accused of killing at least 800 people in the Congolese province of North Kivu last year.
