Justice Minister Morgan Johansson and Social Affairs Minister Lena Hallengren presented the initiatives at a press conference.

The government is contributing additional money to the budget of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service and the Swedish National Council for Health and Welfare (Sis).

According to a bill, the fine discount for young people aged 18 to 20 will disappear in January 2022. It is expected to generate more inmates in the country’s institutions and, therefore, the government strengthens the allocation of the Swedish Service of Prisons and Probation at an additional SEK 455 million.

– The prison service must have time to build to catch up. Many more places are needed to cover up, says Attorney General Morgan Johansson (S).

Since July, the Swedish Prison and Probation Service has also had more opportunities to monitor people who have been sentenced to parole. To cover the costs of this, an additional 39 million SEK will be extended by 2021.

Sis will be strengthened by SEK 110 million in 2021 and subsequently by SEK 100 million per year from 2022 to strengthen security.

– These additions will be used, among other things, to fund adequate perimeter protection that will prevent future releases and leaks, says Social Affairs Minister Lena Hallengren (S).
