Starting at 5pm on Friday afternoon, the climate organization Extinction Rebellion will fill some of the streets of Gothenburg. They will make several shorter barricades in the center of the city.
– We will exit at the pedestrian crossings and stay for about seven minutes when it turns red. We will repeat this a few times and a little later we will have some performances in Nordstan and Kungsportsplatsen, among others, dealing with climate change, says Jonas Green, spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion.
The blockades will start at Nya Allén and Parkgatan and then the activists will continue to Bältesspännarparken, Kungsportsplatsen and Drottningtorget where they will perform. The last stop will be Nordstan. Jonas Green estimates the lockouts will last a total of two and a half to three hours.
“Little things are not enough”
The event is organized by Extinctionc Rebellion Gothenburg and Jonas says everyone is welcome to participate.
– The only requirement is that all those who come forward agree on the premises of being peaceful since we use only peaceful civil disobedience, he says.
The action, he explains, will be a continuation of the protests against the Preemraff expansion that have taken place in recent weeks.
– We feel desperation because those in power do not listen to the investigation. An expansion of Preemraff would aggravate the current situation. We must take big steps on the issue because little things are no longer enough and that is why we have to commit civil disobedience, he says.

Police will dialogue with activists
Thomas Fuxborg, a press spokesman for the Gothenburg Police, explains that Extinction Rebellion is not allowed to carry out the action.
– They do not have permission, but on the other hand you have the right to express your opinion without having permission to demonstrate. We usually have a dialogue with stakeholders, he says.
Police usually give protesters a few minutes to move. If they don’t obey, they can be cared for.
– We will have patience and we can hope that motorists will too. It will be detrimental to public order and motorists generally get upset in such situations, he says.
Apologies in advance
Jonas Green explains that the core is not causing annoyance and delay to ordinary people who stay outdoors, but rather about getting politicians to listen.
– We’re sorry to have caused inconvenience to people coming home from work, but we feel compelled to do so so that those in power listen and take the weather seriously, he says.
Jonas Green explains that these locks obviously cause irritation to road users, but that they also often get a lot of sympathy from car drivers.
– That some are a few minutes late home from work is a cost that we are willing to pay. We are facing huge changes and the irritation caused by this protest is small in this context, he says.
