The trials are carried out in collaboration with the Swedish Public Health Agency, Stockholm Infection Control and Karolinska researchers. Family physicians, led by Stefan Amér, are responsible for the medical care of approximately half of the elderly in the Stockholm region and several municipalities have expressed interest in participating in the trial.
– In the first round, our goal is to test the staff because it is now identified as a possible source of infection, which can be of great importance for the spread of infection now that the infection is increasing in society, says Stefan Amér.
The idea is that By performing rapid sampling, today’s so-called antigen tests, and traditional PCR tests, you can be sure whether rapid samples are equally safe in determining whether someone is a carrier of COVID-19 infection.
– If this goes well, then we can get a tool to be able to monitor the staff, to stop the spread of the infection to the nursing homes before it has time to take root among the residents, says Stefan Amér.
And the test operation, which initially comprises around 100 employees in nursing homes in the Stockholm region, will start shortly.
– Yes, as soon as we can. I hope we can be well on track with the method this week, says Stefan Amér.
