The president of the United States is not chosen by direct election, but by 538 representatives – electors – chosen by the votes of the citizens.
The most important thing in American elections is not the total number of votes, without winning in the correct states. In most states, the result is a fact: the same party wins election after election. Even states with a large population, that is, many electoral votes, are the most important to win.
This means that presidential elections are decided in a few states and that a candidate can be elected president even if the competitor has received more votes from citizens.
In the 2016 election, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton received the most votes, but Donald Trump was elected president.

Immigration. Trump has tried many ways to prevent and hinder immigration. It has imposed a ban on immigrants from several Muslim nations.
Biden has called Trump’s restrictions an abuse of power aimed primarily at non-white immigrants and has vowed to stop deportations for 100 days after his election. But he has not said what will happen to the restrictions imposed after the crown outbreak.
Abortion law. Trump has worked hard to make abortion difficult for women, appointed new judges who oppose abortion and withdrew support for various organizations.
Biden says he will remove restrictions on the abortion law and fight to resume international aid to abortion organizations.
Energy and climate. Some of Trump’s important electoral promises were about saving coal energy, stopping various fossil energy regulations, and abandoning the Paris Agreement. He has called the greenhouse effect “a scam, invented by the Chinese.”
Biden’s election promises mean that the United States will return to the Paris Agreement and be climate neutral by 2050.
Obamacare. Trump has consistently worked to get rid of health care reform Obamacare, a system that provides health insurance to millions of people but is criticized for being costly by critics. In a last attempt to eliminate health insurance, Trump has denounced it to the Supreme Court for its annulment.
Instead, Biden wants to expand health insurance to cover millions more Americans, as an alternative to private solutions.
Taxes. Donald Trump’s reform in 2017 meant a reduction in corporate tax and a reduction in income tax at higher salary levels.
Joe Biden promises to raise the corporate tax, not to the previous level of 35 percent, but to 28 percent. In addition, he wants to increase the federal income tax on really high wages and introduce a progressive tax on capital gains.
