Every fifth place in the police lineup is empty

794 people have started their training as police officers during the fall, according to a start-of-classes report from the recruiting authority. This means that only 75 percent of the 1,020 available places were filled. The reason, according to the authority, is the pandemic.

– We expected a higher figure, but we are still satisfied under the circumstances, Anders Henckel, acting group manager in police training tells TT.

The moderates want to make the profession more attractive

The moderates’ legal policy spokesman, Johan Forsell, believes the profession needs to become more attractive so that more people apply for it.

– I think it is necessary to make a specific salary investment, Forsell tells TT.

He also criticizes the fact that the government has not implemented such an initiative.

Interior Minister Mikael Damberg (S) believes that a salary increase is something the police can decide internally and that the government will continue its investment in the police for an additional 1.9 billion SEK in 2021.

– Terms and salaries have improved in recent years, it is a prerequisite for reaching the goal of 10,000 more police employees, Damberg tells TT.

The contracting authority, on the other hand, believes that the number of applicants is not decisive. Rather, it is about the applicants being qualified.

– Actually, we do not want more candidates, but the right candidate, says Anders Henckel.

According to the authority, more than half of the more than 23,000 applications were not eligible.
