Evacuations after heavy rains in Australia

A storm that lasted five days has forced hundreds of people in northeastern Australia to flee their homes.

Water levels have risen sharply, causing low roads to close.

Some of the most famous beaches on the coast have been washed away, including the large beach at the Byron Bay resort in northern New South Wales.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (Bom) predicts that the rains will subside on Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning local time, but warns that thunderstorms could still bring heavy local rains that could lead to flooding.

The Australian summer is expected to be affected by the La Niña weather phenomenon, which may be manifested, among other things, by torrential rains causing significant damage.

– We have received warnings from meteorological experts that La Niña will affect the summer on the east coast of Australia, so we must expect the unexpected, Gladys Berejiklian, Prime Minister of New South Wales tells ABC.
