The virus has killed 1.7 million people and has crippled the world economy. After an unprecedented development process, a large number of countries in Europe are starting vaccination against covid-19, something that many hope is the beginning to the end of the corona pandemic.
The vaccination campaign is historically unprecedented and the challenges are many, as a region with 450 million inhabitants must mass vaccinate its populations. The health systems of several EU countries are among the best in the world, but the scope of the project means that retired health workers, medical students and soldiers have been asked for help.
Normal life 2021?
Despite relatively widespread opposition in France and Poland, among others, the European Commission hopes that the vaccine will allow a return to normal life in 2021.
“We are now turning the page after a difficult year,” said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
“Vaccination is the sustainable way out of the pandemic.”
In Hungary, the first residents received a syringe from Pfizers and Biontech on Saturday, when the vaccine was also delivered to all 27 member states.
In France, Italy, Austria, Spain and Portugal, vaccination will start on Sunday, as in Sweden.
In Germany too large-scale injections are given on Sunday, but already on Saturday 101-year-old Edith Kwoizalla in Halberstadt became the first in the country to be vaccinated.
Prime minister first
Unlike many other countries, the Czech Republic decided to give the first injection to its prime minister, Andrej Babis, who was vaccinated at the Central Military Hospital in Prague on Sunday morning.
Vaccination had already started in non-EU countries such as the United Kingdom and Switzerland, as well as in the United States, where more than a million people have already been vaccinated.
Adhanom Ghebreyesus, head of the WHO, Tedro, calls on the inhabitants of the world to persevere for a while and respect the guidelines and regulations of physical distance, pending adequate vaccination coverage.
– The vaccine offers us a way out of this tragedy. But it will take time before everyone is vaccinated, he says.
The EU has negotiated the price of EUR 15.50 (about SEK 157) for a dose of Pfizer / Biontech’s covid-19 vaccine, according to non-public documents obtained by the Reuters news agency.
The cost is slightly lower than in the United States, which accepted the price of $ 19.50 for the same vaccine.
