“The national defense army has destroyed 42 anti-peace elements,” reported Fana TV on Thursday. Those described as “anti-peace elements” were held responsible for the bloody attack in western Ethiopia on Wednesday.
According to the Ethiopian National Human Rights Commission, more than a hundred people were killed when gunmen attacked the village of Bekoji, located in the Bulen area of the Benishangul-Gumuz region, where several different ethnic groups live.
Fana TV writes that the army in connection with his counterattack he also seized a number of weapons, including bows.
In a related incident, five high-ranking officials in the region were also arrested for their alleged involvement in Wednesday’s massacres.
Benishangul-Gumuz, which is relatively close to conflict-ravaged Tigray, has been the scene of violent clashes in recent years. Recently, farmers and businessmen from the neighboring Amhara region have moved to the area, leading to intensified conflicts over agricultural land.
