Ethiopian government forces have taken control from the Tigray Liberation Front (TPLF) over the city of Adigrat in the Tigray region. This is what the government of the country affirms.

Adigrat, located less than 12 miles north of the regional capital Mekelle, is the latest in a series of cities to fall under the control of government forces. Since fighting broke out in early November, government forces have also declared that they have taken control of the strategically important cities of Adawa and Aksum.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019, launched a military operation in Tigray earlier this month following a deadly attack on federal forces in the state, an attack that the TPLF denies having accomplished.

Information about the fighting is scant as the Addis Ababa government has shut down telecommunications and internet communications with the region since the start of the unrest, but hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people have been killed and tens of thousands have fled to the neighboring Sudan.
