The Ethiopian army says it is at “war” with the ruling TPLF party in the northern Tigray region.

The plot comes after two days of serious clashes between federal and regional military forces.

Both sides have lashed out at the rhetoric and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who received the Nobel Peace Prize, accuses Tigray of attacking the Ethiopian army.

Deputy Chief of Staff Berhanu Jula reinforced the threats Thursday:

– Our country has ended in a war that we did not expect. It is embarrassing and pointless.

Berhanu Jula also told a press conference in the capital Addis Ababa that fighting should be limited in the region.

But the Tigray leadership accuses Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of lying about the history of the attack under the pretext of carrying out a military operation.

What has started now is an invasion, says Tigray’s leader, President Debretsion Gebremichael.

This is a war that we are waging to defend our existence.

There is no information on deaths or injuries in the fighting, and information from the region is scarce as telephone and Internet traffic are partially down.
