Estonia: Survivor Sara: I saw military transport

Immediately after the sinking of Estonia on September 28, 1994, rumors began to circulate that the ship was carrying top-secret military equipment.

The information was rejected by the Swedish authorities, but in the end the armed forces were forced to confirm it after a senior customs official revealed two military transports. But the armed forces deny that Estonia had such cargo on board the night the ship sank.

Saw military vehicles rolling on board

Now Sara Hedrenius, a survivor from Estonia, says she witnessed the loaded military vehicles rolling on board before departure.

“The ship is late, so I go out on deck and look toward the parking lot.” Then I see that there will be a transport that goes fast, escorted by three, four motorcycles. Green Painted Military Vehicles Ride On Ship, Says Sara Hedrenius In New Documentary “Estonia: the discovery that changes everything”.

– It is at least one car with a large box on the platform. When they are in the boat we go. I think, “Aha, they were waiting for you,” he says.

“There must have been many who saw”

Sara Hedrenius says she found it strange that there was a military transport aboard a passenger ship. She also thought it strange when many years later Estonia was confirmed to have had military transports, but not just that night, because “there must have been a lot”, both passengers on deck and staff, who saw what she saw, she says. .

– There are still many unanswered questions about Estonia. Why can’t the authorities confirm the military transport that night when I know it was? I witnessed this event, he says in the documentary.

In 2004, SVT revealed that there was an agreement between Swedish Customs and the Swedish Armed Forces that Estonia would be used as a transport route for secret weapons. Swedish Customs lets these transports pass without inspection.

Defense confirms two transports

The Swedish Armed Forces confirmed two such transports in the same year in the weeks leading up to the wreck. Subsequently, a government investigation reached the same conclusion.

According to information over the years, these were weapons systems of the Soviet Union that were of interest to the intelligence services of Sweden and the rest of the Western world. The Soviet Union had collapsed a few years earlier and there were good opportunities to buy weapons and secret information in the chaos that reigned in the new Russia.

Investigative journalist Stephen Davis from New Zealand says in the documentary that there was a collaboration between the British intelligence service MI6 and the intelligence services in Sweden and Estonia.

Two Russian warnings

The night Estonia sank, the ship smuggled crucial information about Russia’s ballistic missile program and equipment belonging to that program. The smuggling of military secrets and equipment had been going on for a long time, says Stephen Davis in “Estonia: the discovery that changes everything”.

It says that Russia strongly warned both Estonia and MI6 at least twice, the second not long before the sinking.

Sara Hedrenius believes that new diving should be allowed in Estonia, that it is now prohibited due to a serious peace law, and that a new independent investigation should be carried out.

– We need clarity. I respect the peace of the grave. But you can’t take dead people hostage so as not to investigate how they died, it says in SVT’s Helgstudion.

Five revelations in the new documentary about Estonia

one. There is a hitherto unknown 4 x 1.2 meter large hole in the Estonian helmet. This may explain the rapid sinking process if the water were also rushing that way.

two. Survivors say the water flowed under the car’s tires, contrary to earlier information that the water was coming from above.

3. British divers, commissioned by the Swedish government to investigate Estonia in 1994, say it was easy to dive the wreck and that they could have easily rescued at least 150 bodies, if only they had been cleared.

Four. Survivors testify that there was a military transport on board during the night of the disaster, something that the Swedish defense denies.

5. A British journalist says intelligence services in Sweden, Estonia and the United Kingdom, in cooperation, smuggled military equipment from Russia to Estonia, and that Russia warned them to continue operations.
