Erik Hamrén resigns as captain of the national team.
EM-miss.
The captain of the Icelandic team, Erik Hamrén, is now resigning.
– My decision, he says.
His time as captain of the Icelandic national team lasted only two years. Erik Hamrén announced at today’s press conference that he is leaving.
– Its my desicion. It has always been my goal to take the team to the European Championship and then let someone else take over, says Hamrén.
But Iceland and Hamrén missed out on this summer’s Euro Cup following overtime drama in a play-off loss to Hungary earlier this week. And the next two Nations League matches against Denmark and England will be the last two international matches in which Iceland is led by Hamrén.
– We are happy with Hamrén, and the players are disappointed that Hamrén decides to resign. But life goes on and now we want to focus on the World Cup qualifiers, says team captain Aron Gunnarsson according to Ruv.
Outgoing contract
Hamrén’s contract with Iceland expires after the national team meeting in November, so it will not be renewed.
Hamrén, 63, replaced Heimir Hallgrímsson, who led Iceland to the World Cup in Russia, where Iceland was last in their group.
With Hamrén as captain of the national team, Iceland finished third in their qualifying group for the European Championship behind France and Turkey. The island nation had to rely on the playoffs to secure a spot in the European Championship. They won against Romania in the semi-finals, but lost in the decisive match against Hungary. There, Iceland led 1-0 in the 88th minute, but lost 1-2 in extra time.
