Two days ago, your team disappeared.
But after today’s announcement, Jörgen Ericson is once again the coach of Göteborg FC.
– Fantastic, it goes fast in this industry. Maybe it was something like this that we needed so that we could take the next step, he says.
From discontinued investment and lost equipment to new investment in a new way in 48 hours. It revolves around Gothenburg FC.
– This was the best news of all. Especially for girls, now they can sit back and relax, says Jörgen Ericson.
There will be an Allsvenskan game in 2021 for the club, as well as games in the Champions League this fall. But the GFC coach doesn’t know much more than that at the moment. He does not even know if he himself will continue to be a coach.
– I have no idea how the thinking goes. My God, everything is so new. But you have to start with what is available, I have one year left on my contract. But 48 hours ago something happened that was not on the map, the most important thing now is that it will be good for Gothenburg, which will be football in any case. Now we can sit back and watch what happens.

However, he assumes that the club will continue to invest.
– Yes, if it had only been tried to make the club work more, I don’t think it would have been relevant. If you’re going to get into this, you have to give the girls every chance. That is the difference when we come to Europe.
For two years in a row, Gothenburg has had the toughest possible draw in the Champions League, against Bayern Munich and Manchester City. But it has also given the players and the club management the opportunity to see how the best clubs in Europe have seen conditions.
– We have players from the national team throughout the squad, but there is much more. No wonder the players are good then. I think we have built it better and better, but we are not close to how the Bayern Munich women’s team is doing.
Can Gothenburg come close and compete seriously now?
– Yes, because now I think it will be a continuation, it will be appropriate. So it is not possible to achieve it like the best teams, with their own arenas and facilities. He’s fucking sick. But now it should be easier for us in the Champions League, with the seeded points we have accumulated. We must not forget that we have the best you can get from the Nordics, there are players from national teams everywhere. Damn, we should be able to get closer somehow. If we have these opportunities, we can give the girls the best possible conditions and it shouldn’t be impossible. But there is a long way to go.
Peter Bronsman has come under fire from fans, the media and other clubs since he and his board made the decision to shut down the association’s elite investment. But Jörgen Ericson finds no reason to criticize the club president and the main sponsor.
– He’s a little genius, Bronze Man.
Do you think you can continue as president?
– Sure why not? What he has done over the years and invested money … I have a lot to say about him. For me, it has been a fantastic three years. The bronze man usually gets what he wants and also knows what he wants. So for my part, there is no question, he has started something now that gets others hooked. I don’t know the strategy, but it’s smart. So for my part, he’s happy to continue as president.
Do you think this was even their strategy from the beginning, attracting new stakeholders?
– Yes … you never know. You know these geniuses, when he says he’s going to be good, then he’s going to be good. So how do you do it? It could be said that it shook properly. And suddenly a whole city woke up, individuals, associations, sponsors. If that was his strategy, who knows? He’s ready to get slapped and woke everyone up. Now it will still be a game, so in any case, I think he has succeeded. So it’s clear that for the players it was a shock, oh my gosh too.
How do you think they were affected by what happened?
– He trembled and they were desperate. But they are so determined and professional that I don’t think negative emotions have had time to take root. The fact that it changed so fast, that no player had time to leave, I think it was nice in many ways. What is difficult now is bringing in new players.
Gothenburg has since the end of the season lost top players like Rebecka Blomqvist, Natalia Kuikka and Emma Berglund, players who now must be replaced.
– Time passes, soon we will move on to next year. And they absolutely must be replaced. The big problem is that it is the players of the national team that are going to enter and most of the Nordics are busy now. Then, of course, it has been working during the fall, contacts have been made with the players.
Do you think it might be more difficult to get them to sign now that confidence in ITC has been eroded?
– Probably depends on what’s coming up now. It must be done exactly how the investment is to be made.
In the coming weeks, Peter Bronsman and the rest of the ITC leadership will meet with two other clubs to discuss future cooperation. Ericson doesn’t know which clubs they are.
– No, I have no idea. But it will probably become clear in the future.
The club’s spokesperson, Tore Lund, knows which clubs are involved, but is not authorized to say so.
– We will sit down with both associations, we’ll see. The hope is that we find a strong club to work with. So what it means in the form of facilities, training facilities, what the jerseys look like, what the club should be called, these are all question marks right now. We’ll see where it ends.
