This weekend, Turkey begins a new major military exercise in the eastern Mediterranean, and on Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued threats against Greece, threats that diluted mounting tensions between the two NATO countries.

“They will understand that Turkey has the political, economic and military strength to tear up unfair maps and documents,” he said in a televised speech.

The exercise will begin on Sunday and the documents and maps referred to by the Turkish president refer to the areas of the Mediterranean that Greece and Cyprus claim are included in their economic zones.

“They will understand it through politics and diplomacy, or in the field through bitter experiences,” Erdogan threatened.

The infected conflict began last month when a Turkish exploration ship, escorted by the Turkish army, began searching for oil and gas in the waters between Cyprus and the Greek islands of Kastellorizo and Crete.
