Emergency visit makes Somalia nob to Kenya

Somalia breaks with neighboring Kenya. The severed diplomatic ties come after Kenyan leaders hosted representatives from the breakaway state of Somaliland.

Information Minister Osman Abukar Dubbe says in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu that Kenyans are “a peace-loving society” but that neighboring country’s leaders “work to separate” the two countries. Therefore, Kenyan diplomats are being ordered to leave Somalia, which is also withdrawing its envoys from Nairobi.

Somaliland is one of two areas in northern Somalia, the other being Puntland, which was unleashed in connection with the chaotic development of Somalia in the 1990s. Since then, they have largely functioned like their own countries, though not are internationally recognized.

This week, President Uhuru Kenyatta received the leader of Somaliland, Muse Bihi, in Nairobi.

The situation is particularly tense in Somalia at the moment, as the war-torn country is preparing for the presidential and parliamentary elections that were supposed to take place this year but are now scheduled for February next year.
