Police warn of scammers ravaging Västra Götaland and Halland. Scammers target people in their 90s and search for single people on the Internet.
Then they call and pretend to be from the bank and that they have to change the credit card. Victims are offered home visits due to the pandemic and justify visiting with the elderly without having to leave their homes.
– Often they may also want to photograph the gold that the plaintiff has at home and then ask the person to hand over the gold, along with the person’s cash. A woman born in 1921 was tricked into giving up her wedding ring, Anna-Karin Kjellgren, a crime prevention officer in the fraud section in the West Region, in a statement on the police website.
Since September, 60 experiments have been carried out in Gothenburg, Falkenberg, Varberg, Kungsbacka and Kungälv, half of which have been completed.
– Scammers don’t shy away from funds. They even visit service house accommodation. In several cases, the cards have been used to withdraw money. Unfortunately, ATMs lack camera surveillance, complicating investigative work for the police, says Anna-Karin Kjellgren.
The public is now being asked to inform their elderly relatives and close relatives.
