Police and rescue services had to rush to Ekdalaskolan in Härryda on Sunday night. The alarm went off shortly after nine thirty.
On the spot, the rescue service discovered that there was a fire at the entrance to the school. The fire started on a moped that was placed next to the school and according to the police, everything so far indicates that the fire started.
– If it had been an accident, I would not be standing in the entrance next to a wall where it could have happened, says police spokesman Christer Fuxborg.
According to the police, there was a great risk that the fire would spread. However, the units at the site were able to extinguish it fairly immediately, but they had time to cause smoke damage to parts of the school.
Teaching is canceled
According to a press release from the municipality, there will be no activities in Ekdalaskolan on Monday. This is partly due to damage from the smoke and partly because a technical investigation of the school is underway. Affected students and guardians are to be contacted and staff informed Sunday evening.
Maria Hamrehjelm is a property manager in Härryda municipality and was already present at the school during the evening.
– Of course, it’s always sad when something like this happens. We care about our buildings and the safety of the area. The most important thing right now is to start teaching for the school’s students, he says.
At eight in the morning on Monday, the school principal convened staff to plan possible distance education.
– While we check the damage situation with a repair company, says Maria Hamrehjelm.
Can students go back to school tomorrow?
– I can’t answer that at the moment. We will make a decision later today, after the remediation company’s investigation, when we know what it looks like.
