LONDON. 0-2 deficit and injured goalkeeper after 45 minutes of play at St Mary’s.
Then Edinson Cavani jumped for Manchester United and changed everything.

It was a two-sided match, where both teams each got half. During the first 45 minutes, it was seen who is on top of the table. Admittedly, Southampton was a bit slow and offered Mason Greenwood an early shot and a finish that spanned Burgaveln. After that, the home team began to control the game more and more, thanks a lot to James Ward-Prowse.

For one thing, the captain at the border played purely defense (and received a yellow card after just 16 minutes). He also continued to show off his fine right foot in solid situations, first through a corner Jan Bednarek nodded to score 1-0. Meanwhile, Alex McCarthy had time to repair an error and make a triple save before Ward-Prowse extended only with a perfectly hit free kick that David de Gea was unable to save despite the goalkeeper going in the right direction.
Cavani with giant jump
However, De Gea failed to connect with him, as his teammates expected, and the ball went out. Last season’s successor Dean Henderson (then on loan to Sheffield United) entered the field in his place. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also chose Greenwood and featured the much more experienced Edinson Cavani.
Cavani was heavily involved in United’s complete change in the game landscape. He passed the ball to Bruno Fernandes first with half an hour to go, after which the Portuguese easily put the reduction behind McCarthy to 1-2. Then there were reverse roles with a fourth to play when Cavani nodded on the tie.
Manchester United pushed to complete the change and of course it came in the end. Now it was Marcus Rashford’s turn to give a performance to Cavani, who once again used his forehead. The 3-2 goal in the 92nd minute was enough to secure the victory.
Southampton maintains its fifth place in the table, but United climbs a few steps. Right now, the Manchester club is seventh, one point behind the Saints.
