Ebba Busch questions whether corona experts can stay

The leader of the Christian Democratic party launched a fierce attack on the government on Wednesday, with the Corona Commission report on elder care as a cover. The report attributes the government the greatest responsibility for all deaths of the elderly.

– It’s a plumb critique. The government must act now on the basis of the criticisms presented, otherwise it must resign, if it is not sent to handle the situation the country is in, says Ebba Busch.

She also asks if at this moment it is the right people, inside and outside government, who are leading Sweden’s fight against the pandemic.

– We have asked Stefan Löfven if he really considers that he has people around him (ministers, experts, officials) who are needed to handle this serious situation. We put a big question mark around that, says Ebba Busch.

Are you referring to the Minister of Social Affairs Lena Hallengren?

– It is Stefan Löfven who should make this assessment. But it is a monumental failure that is described in the Commission’s sub-report on care for the elderly. The government has let the country’s elders down.

What experts are you referring to? Is it the management of the Public Health Agency?

– All must be evaluated.

In a press conference Wednesday, Ebba Busch accused the government of not listening to the Christian Democrats’ proposal on care for the elderly in the spring. This partly represents just over SEK 3 billion for municipalities, earmarked for converting part-time jobs into permanent jobs.

– Now we have crisis situations and personnel situations and emergencies far beyond what is reasonable to request from health and care personnel. This proposal should have been implemented before the summer, but it is still relevant, says Ebba Busch.

Another KD proposal it consists of investing just over SEK 2 billion in increasing medical competence in the care of the elderly.

The government and cooperation parties C and L allocated an additional SEK 4 billion to the autumn budget for 2021 for the care of the elderly, as a result of the pandemic.

The Crown Commission attributes the main responsibility to the government for the failure of infection control in the care of the elderly, but also points out the regions and municipalities that are the main activities.

Christian Democrats participate in the government of many municipalities and regions, especially in Stockholm, where the situation has been more difficult. Do you have any self-criticism about the efforts of the Christian Democrats?

– I am convinced that errors and deficiencies will also be found in the municipalities and regions where we are involved and govern. But we’ve also pointed out that much clearer leadership is needed in a crisis like this, says Ebba Busch, who also admits that previous bourgeois governments where KD has been involved are partly to blame for deficiencies in elder care.
