3,256 Swedes have died in covid-19, according to figures from the National Health Authority on Tuesday. 2,862 are 70 years or older. According to statistics from the National Board of Health, most of them lived in nursing homes or had a home service. Dusanka Jankovic, 78, it’s not just a stick in public health statistics. She was a man, a mother, a grandmother, and a friend.
Dusanka lived in her own apartment in Södertälje, was ready by the roots and took care of most of the house. The home service arrived and kept his company a quarter of a day and gave him cleaning assistance once a month.
In early February, Dusanka became ill. She had suffered from aggressive cervical cancer. Cancer treatment was difficult, he received radiotherapy at Karolinska University Hospital 25 times. Because the treatment was exhausting, so he would have to avoid all trips between the hospital and home in Södertälje, he stayed in the Stockholm nursing home during that time.
He was recovered from aggressive cancer
Last week in March, the radiation treatment was finally done. Dusanka scratched herself, says her daughter Marina Kostic.
– The doctors had removed the cancer and my mother became more alert. Mom would stay a few more weeks in the Stockholm nursing home for rehabilitation. Then she would go home.
Then the coronavirus entered the house. Despite the fact that Dusanka had a poor immune system after cancer treatment, she had to lie down in a room where there were coronary infections.

– A nurse approached my mother, without oral protection, and told me that she had just been with a patient with coronary infection. Mom was very scared!
Although she was not dying, she was placed in a palliative room. Marina received the explanation that it was the place of attention.
– Mom thought it was so uncomfortable, she saw them carry bodies in black plastic bags and was afraid to end up in one.
On April 11, the Stockholm nursing home introduced a ban on visitors. Dusanka’s children and grandchildren were not allowed to visit. However, the relatives of the others had to come because the others were dying.
Dusanka was concerned about the infection. She was tested multiple times, but was negative.
But Dusanka felt better. She would be allowed to go to her apartment with a work therapist to see if she needed any tools to stay home again.
– Mom was happy and joyful, says Marina.

I would go home – I was infected
Her daughter Marina Kostic is convinced that her mother became infected in the accommodation.
– Everything else is impossible. She tested negative after cancer treatment, then was only there and was also unable to meet relatives or anyone else.
Marina Kostic, who works with healthcare and personal care, is central to protecting against infection in the Stockholm nursing home.
– They had no control, the infected could run however they wanted. It was a circus. Not once did I see staff wearing visors, mouth guards or face masks.

Dusanka Jankovic was in the intensive care unit of the Hospital del Sur for a week and a half. Last Monday, the staff called with a cheery message: It seemed to be spinning. Dusanka not only survived cancer, but now she also fought against crown infection.
– Mom’s infection values began to improve, the fever dropped. The staff said they could not guarantee that it would do well, but that it was improving.
Now Dusanka was in touch and they could talk on the phone.
Marina tells her mother that the fever is going down, that it is now changing. She reminds her mother that she survived a lot.
“I have,” Dusanka replies.
The next day, Marina receives calls from the intensive care service again. Now Dusanka is dead. Marina didn’t understand at first, she thought they were wrong in person.
– I’m not done with her, she hasn’t lived clearly! Mom could have had many more good years.
I don’t want to say how many people were affected
Marianne Spiik, head of communications at the Stockholm nursing home, first tries to defend the accommodation with Dusanka, perhaps contracting the infection from elsewhere. Then the communications manager says they don’t comment on individual patients. It also does not mean how many of its residents were infected and died in covid-19. So the accommodation just wants to comment in writing.
Georg Engel, a physician and chief operating officer, regrets that family members have lost family members and says they are available for calls.
The Stockholm nursing home writes that they have continuously and decisively worked to protect patients and reduce the risk of infection by introducing a visitor ban and following the guidelines and recommendations of the authorities regarding, for example, samples, hygiene routines, isolation of infected and protective equipment.
The nursing home writes that “if there is reason to believe that something went wrong with our care and treatment,” we investigate what happened and how similar events can be avoided in the future.
Ingmar Skoog, professor and director of the Center for Aging and Health at the University of Gothenburg, believes that Dusanka’s death is a tragic example of what happens when there are no procedures for infection prevention and hygiene in the care of seniors.
– It is absolutely terrible. Also, it is strange that they put her in a palliative room.
Marina Kostic, 55, plans to report the Stockholm nursing home to the Inspectorate for Health and Care, IVO. But first she and her sister will bury their mother.
I am so damned. If Mom had received the proper care, she would have lived today.
