A research project on emergency drone deliveries has been ongoing at Karolinska Institutet (KI) since 2015, and in June, the project, which is a collaboration between KI, technology company Everdrone and SOS Alarm, is being tested. .
“We have made over 100 test deliveries in the past few months and can see that the method works very well,” says Mats Sällström, CEO of Everdrone, in a press release.
The project begins in the municipality of Gothenburg and Kungälv in an area with 80,000 residents and the ambition is to expand the use to more places.
Maria Khorsand: “In emergency situations, count every second”
According to KI, about 6,000 cardiac deaths are reported each year outside of hospitals. Only one in ten survives and the hope is that drones, as a complement to the ambulance call, will save more lives.
“In emergency situations, every second counts. With the help of drones, we can fly medicines and equipment quickly and to more inaccessible places, waiting for the ambulance to arrive, “said Maria Khorsand, CEO of SOS Alarm, in a press release.
Drones fly primarily autonomously, but are controlled by a drone pilot. The system was tested from June to September and then the results will be evaluated.
