Drama: Degerfors won, but will have to wait to celebrate Allsvenskan promotion

Degerfors last dropped from the Allsvenskan in 1997, but is now close to playing Allsvenskan football again after 23 long years. On Saturday night, the classic team had a chance of promotion in the event of a win against Gai at home and Jönköpings Södra’s defeat or center against Norrby, but the promotion party was postponed in the end.

Degerfors took the lead in the sixth minute off Gais, when Adam Carlén hit the ball into goal from a corner kick. Gais then drew in the 23rd minute through Adnan Maric, but shortly before the break the home team regained the lead again through Gustav Granath, who found a 2-1 tackle at halftime.

Then Gais came close to drawing again through Emil Wahlström and Richard Yarsuvat, but failed to draw, and so Degerfors won the match.

– Actually, it was a bit more nervous than normal matches. Before I felt like it was a little more tingling in my stomach, but as soon as you stepped out onto the field it let go. I was just driving, Granath tells Dplay.

Degerfors also looked like a long time to celebrate promotion tonight, but in the 86th minute Amir Al-Ammari brought Norrby down from the penalty spot for a 1-0 win for Jönköpings Södra at Stadsparksvallen. This means that the main battle has yet to be decided.

Degerfors continues to lead the Superettan with one point less than Halmstads BK and eight points less than Jönköpings Södra in third place. There are three games left of the season. Degerfors will face AFC Eskilstuna on 21 November. Gais in turn ranks ninth in the league game.

– It is clear that it looks good, but we will still get the points. We will go for three wins as we want as many points as possible and we want to win the series, says Granath.
