He was burned to help his patients, but became ill with the coronavirus.

On Tuesday, Dr. Reber Zandi, 62, died at Danderyds Hospital.

“We are convinced that he was infected at work,” says his wife Vyan Zandi.

It was the fight that characterized Reber Zandi’s life. As a young man he fought for freedom against Saddam Hussein’s soldiers in the Kurdish mountains.

He saw his friends die and finally received nine bullets. Seriously wounded, he arrived in Sweden in 1984 as a political refugee.

Here Reber Zandi received care for his injuries and was able to start building a new life. He entered the medical line at Umeå University and eventually became a general practitioner and general medicine specialist.

For a time he ran his own medical center in Bromma, Stockholm. Most recently, he worked primarily at a health center in Blackeberg.

Picked up by ambulance

– He loved his patients and cared for a few, says his friend and medical colleague Rawand Rasul.

Around March 23 she had a fever and after three days she had trouble breathing. The wife asked for an ambulance, which picked him up from the family home in Sundbyberg for a trip to Danderyds Hospital.

The next day, the condition had worsened so much that he needed to receive respiratory care.

Then came forty-six days of tossing between hope and despair.

“I was infected at work”

– I met him on the last day. I saw that he opened his eyes and shook his head. It was in a different way than before and I thought it would be fine, says his wife Vyan Zandi.

According to the family, Reber Zandi did not belong to a risk group.

– Everything indicates that he was infected by a patient at work, says Vyan Zandi.

“Incredibly generous”

Dr. Rawand Rasul participated in the efforts to try to save Reber and was by his side when he died.

– I tried to save him. But unfortunately we cannot do miracles. Sweden has lost a very capable doctor, he says.

Reber Zandi had an adult son and an eight-year-old daughter. Wife Vyan Zandi tells us that family was always the first thing in her life.

– He was the best man in the world and he was incredibly generous.

Crying to a colleague

“We provide a highly appreciated and qualified physician and coworker,” he says.

Were you infected at your workplace?

– Of course, this is a question we have asked ourselves. But you can’t say it. We can only affirm that at this time there was a national spread of the infection.

Have you taken the necessary measures to protect your staff?

– Yes. There was triage in place. We close the reception and introduce digital attention. And protective gear has always been available, says Brehmer.

Many dreams remain

Family and friends say that Reber Zandi had many dreams left to fulfill. He hoped to open a youth treatment center outside of Stockholm. I am glad to see your daughter grow up and I hoped one day to see her homeland independently and freely.

But on Tuesday, May 12 at 1:36 p.m., after 46 days at Danderyds Hospital, the Reber Zandi fight ended.

– We will remember it with love, says Vyan Zandi.
