Downloading Tiktok is banned in the US on Sunday

The ban likely means that the Chinese Tiktok app needs to be removed from Apple’s app store and Google’s equivalent, so it can’t be downloaded or updated. However, applications that have already been downloaded will continue to work until further notice.

On November 12, the ban will be extended. Then neither will it be allowed to provide space on the server or handle the Internet traffic that is needed for the application to work. Now it remains to be seen whether the sale of Tiktok to an American company, which President Donald Trump has tried to push forward, will occur before then.

– If there is no deal ready by November 12, Tiktok will in effect be closed, says US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross on Fox Business television channel.

The bottom line is a presidential order starting this summer, forcing Tiktok’s Chinese owner Bytedance to sell its US operations. If this did not happen, the application would be banned. This is because, according to US authorities, Tiktok collects large amounts of data that can be accessed by the Chinese state. A sale to an American company would change that, it was the requirement.

Since then, Bytedance has negotiated an agreement with Microsoft and Oracle, among others. Recently, an agreement was presented with Oracle, which, however, would not mean a pure sale but a kind of partnership.

Today’s message can be seen as a rejection of this approach.

It is unclear what this means for users in other countries. A statement from the US Department of Commerce on Friday said the ban applies specifically to app stores in the United States. But given that both Apple and Google are US companies, a new suspension of transactions with Tiktok could mean in practice a global ban.

The Tiktok service is based on clips of short films that users upload. The application has grown to become one of the largest social networking services in the world, with hundreds of millions of users around the world.
